The Basics

What is PEMF therapy?

PEMF — pulsed electromagnetic field therapy — is a non-thermal, drug-free treatment that passes a precisely tuned, pulsed magnetic field through the body to restore the electrical baseline of cells that have lost it. Every cell in your body operates on a voltage gradient. Inflammation, chronic restriction, autoimmunity, and stress all degrade that gradient over time. A PEMF coil sends a changing magnetic field through tissue — unimpeded by skin, fat, or bone — and that field induces tiny eddy currents directly inside your cells. Those currents don’t heat the tissue; they modulate the voltage across the cell membrane, the layer of physiology where inflammation, mast-cell activity, and tissue tone are actually regulated.

Most patients describe a calm that begins during the session and lasts through the day. The therapy is mechanistic, not symptomatic: rather than masking a signal, it corrects the electrical environment of the tissue so the tissue can stop generating the signal in the first place.

What PEMF is not

Not heat. Unlike HUMAN TECAR therapy, ultrasound, or infrared, PEMF does not warm the tissue. The effect is electrical, not thermal.

Not a TENS unit. TENS pushes electrical current through skin electrodes to block pain signals. PEMF uses a magnetic field that induces current inside the tissue — no electrodes, no surface stimulation.

Not a wellness mat. The clinical Magnus Magnetica system is a programmable, medical-grade device — not a consumer relaxation pad.

The Mechanism

How PEMF works, step by step

A coil generates a time-varying magnetic field that passes through your body unimpeded by skin, fat, or bone. Wherever it meets tissue, that changing field induces a low-amplitude electrical current — eddy currents — directly inside the cells. Here is the chain of events.

Step 01

The magnetic pulse reaches every cell

Unlike electrical stimulation, a magnetic field is not blocked by skin, fascia, or bone. The solenoid generates a pulse that penetrates the entire treatment field at the same intensity — surface and deep tissue receive the same dose simultaneously.

Step 02

Eddy currents are induced inside the tissue

A changing magnetic field induces an electrical current in any conductor it passes through — including living tissue. These induced currents are large enough to modulate the voltage-gated channels on the cell membrane.

Step 03

Ion channels open and membrane potential normalizes

Voltage-gated calcium channels, TRP channels, and Piezo mechanoreceptors all respond to the induced field. In tissue that has been chronically depolarized — irritated, inflamed, restricted — this nudges the resting membrane potential back toward normal, so the cell stops firing distress signals.

Step 04

Downstream effects cascade

Mitochondrial ATP production increases, nitric-oxide signaling shifts, and inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-α drop. Mast cells become harder to degranulate. The effect continues for hours after the session ends.

PEMF is mechanistic, not symptomatic. It does not mask pain or override a signal — it corrects the electrical environment of the tissue so the tissue can stop generating the signal in the first place.

Conditions & Indications

What does PEMF therapy treat?

PEMF is one of the most versatile tools in the clinic. At FIT Los Angeles we run it three ways: as a standalone weekly therapy for systemic effects, as a post-procedure recovery layer, and as a daily-use option for patients who need it. The applications fall into three broad groups.

1. Recovery, performance & wellness

The most common reason people in Beverly Hills seek PEMF: they want to recover faster, inflame less, and sleep better. PEMF shifts heart-rate variability toward parasympathetic (“rest and repair”) dominance, downshifts low-grade systemic inflammation, and increases ATP production at the mitochondrial level — an energy patients describe as closer to a good night’s sleep than to caffeine.

Post-training soreness & edema · general inflammation downshift · sleep tied to nervous-system tension · HRV & parasympathetic support · travel & jet-lag recovery · everyday fatigue.

2. Mast cells, chronic hives & MCAS

This is where PEMF does something almost no other Los Angeles clinic markets. Mast-cell degranulation is gated by calcium influx through channels on the mast-cell membrane. PEMF modulates that membrane voltage in a way that raises the threshold for histamine release — in plain terms, the mast cell becomes harder to provoke. Patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria and mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) frequently report that hives resolve over a course of regular sessions, including people who have failed multiple antihistamine regimens.

Chronic spontaneous urticaria (hives) · MCAS symptoms · dermographism · cold- or pressure-induced hives · histamine-driven flushing & itch · inflammatory skin reactivity.

Our honest position: this is a consistently observed clinical effect with strong mechanistic support — not an established cure. The published literature is still catching up, and we describe it that way to every patient.

3. Pain, injury & post-procedure recovery

Fascia is not passive packing material — it contains contractile fibroblasts, mechanoreceptors, and voltage-sensitive ion channels. When it is chronically irritated, those receptors stay activated and the muscle stays gripped. PEMF normalizes their firing threshold and shifts fibroblast remodeling back toward organized collagen. It also has randomized-trial support in knee osteoarthritis and long-standing FDA clearance for bone-healing indications. This is why PEMF pairs so well with manual therapy and procedures — tissue freshly treated with Hydrofascia Release™, Prolotherapy, or ProloBoost Dual PRP is in an active remodeling state that PEMF supports.

Chronic muscle tension & guarding · fascial restriction & post-surgical scar · hypermobility pain (EDS, HSD) · tendinopathy & joint stiffness · osteoarthritis · post-fracture & post-injury recovery · peripheral nerve irritation · post-procedure recovery.

How It Compares

PEMF vs. TENS, TECAR, ultrasound & shockwave

These modalities are often confused because patients lie down for all of them. They work in completely different ways and on different layers of the tissue.

Modality Energy Heats tissue? What you feel Best for
PEMF Pulsed magnetic field No Gentle bouncing, deep calm Inflammation, mast cells, recovery, autonomic reset
TENS Surface electrical current No Buzzing / tingling Temporary pain-signal blocking
TECAR Radiofrequency Yes (deep heat) Pleasant warmth Deep-tissue structural remodeling
Ultrasound Sound waves Mild Little to nothing Localized soft-tissue heating
Shockwave Mechanical pressure wave No Sharp, percussive (6–8/10) Chronic tendinopathy, restarting stalled healing

PEMF and TECAR are complementary: TECAR remodels the tissue, PEMF quiets and resets the cellular environment around it. Many patients use both.

Safety

Is PEMF therapy safe?

Yes — PEMF is well tolerated and has an excellent safety profile. It is non-thermal, non-invasive, and does not involve medication or radiation. The therapy has decades of clinical use behind it and long-standing FDA clearance for specific indications such as bone healing and fracture nonunion. That said, a few clear contraindications exist, and we screen for them before your first session.

Who should not have PEMF (or needs clearance first)

Pregnancy · active implanted electronic devices (pacemakers, defibrillators, neurostimulators, implanted pumps) · active malignancy in the treatment field. If any apply to you, tell us — we will adjust the plan or refer appropriately.

The Magnus Magnetica is a CE-marked Class IIa medical device used at FIT Los Angeles under physician oversight as part of a clinical care framework — not as a standalone consumer gadget.

What to Expect

Your session and how often to come

You lie down. The solenoid is positioned over the region being treated. There is no heat and no electrical sensation — most patients feel a gentle bouncing or contraction-type sensation, sometimes light tingling, and many close their eyes or fall asleep. The work happens at a level you cannot feel, but your nervous system can.

PEMF is a frequency-of-use therapy, not a single-shot intervention. Mast-cell stabilization, autonomic shift, and tissue remodeling all compound with repetition — a patient running PEMF 3–5 times a week sees a different result than someone coming twice a month. For active mast-cell or chronic pain conditions we suggest 3–5 sessions per week for the first 6–8 weeks, then 1–3 per week for maintenance.

The Technology

The Magnus Magnetica dual-channel system

FIT Los Angeles runs the latest dual-channel Magnus Magnetica — the professional clinical PEMF platform from Magnetica (Italy). Two independent outputs and two solenoids mean two programs can run at once: we can treat both knees simultaneously, or run a deep musculoskeletal protocol on one region and a systemic anti-inflammatory protocol on another in the same session. The Magnus library contains pre-built clinical protocols — specific frequencies, intensities, and pulse profiles matched to the tissue being targeted, rather than one setting applied to everything.

Physician-Led Care

How PEMF fits into care at FIT Los Angeles

PEMF is rarely used in isolation. Within The Fascia Performance Program, it is layered with skilled manual therapy, shockwave, TECAR, and red-light therapy. As a recovery layer, it is sequenced after Hydrofascia Release™, Dextrose Prolotherapy, and ProloBoost Dual PRP to support active tissue remodeling. For patients with hypermobility, EDS, or MCAS overlap, PEMF often improves fascial and mast-cell symptoms together.

Every plan is overseen by Dr. Jacques Courseault, MD — a national-level fascia and hypermobility specialist and the founder of The Fascia Institute and Treatment Center® of LA. Patients who want to understand their tissue at a deeper level can add Fascial Mapping®, the clinic’s 488-point ultrasound diagnostic.

Frequently Asked

PEMF therapy FAQ

What is PEMF therapy?

PEMF (pulsed electromagnetic field) therapy passes a precisely tuned, pulsed magnetic field through the body. That changing field induces tiny electrical currents inside tissue that modulate the voltage across cell membranes and the ion channels governing inflammation, mast-cell activity, and tissue tone. It is non-thermal, non-invasive, and drug-free.

What does PEMF therapy treat?

At FIT Los Angeles, PEMF is used for recovery, inflammation, and sleep/HRV support; for mast-cell and histamine-driven conditions such as chronic hives and MCAS symptoms; and for fascial and musculoskeletal pain, tendinopathy, osteoarthritis, and post-procedure recovery.

Does PEMF therapy hurt?

No. Most patients feel a gentle bouncing or contraction-type sensation and sometimes light tingling as the nervous system settles. There is no heat and no sharp sensation — many patients relax deeply or fall asleep.

Is PEMF therapy safe? Are there contraindications?

PEMF has an excellent safety profile and is well tolerated. The standard contraindications are pregnancy, active implanted electronic devices (pacemakers, defibrillators, neurostimulators, implanted pumps), and active malignancy in the treatment field. We screen for these before your first session.

How often should I do PEMF therapy?

PEMF is a frequency-of-use therapy. For active mast-cell or chronic pain conditions, 3–5 sessions per week for the first 6–8 weeks; for maintenance, 1–3 sessions per week; for acute flares or post-procedure recovery, daily use is reasonable.

How is PEMF different from TENS or TECAR?

TENS sends electrical current through surface electrodes to block pain signals. TECAR uses radiofrequency to generate deep therapeutic heat. PEMF uses a magnetic field — not electrodes, not heat — to induce currents inside the tissue that reset cell-membrane voltage. PEMF and TECAR are complementary and often combined.

How much does PEMF therapy cost in Beverly Hills?

FIT Los Angeles offers an unlimited PEMF membership at $199/month with no per-session fees and no cap, plus single-session options to try it first. Because PEMF compounds with frequent use, the unlimited membership is the most cost-effective way to dose the therapy properly.
