1,726 days later, Callum Davison won again.

When Callum Davison lifted the trophy at the Stromberg Masters at Moseley Golf Club, it had been 1,726 days — nearly five years — since his last victory. The local resident hadn’t lost his swing. He’d been quietly battling a wall of left upper-back pain that kept him off the course for years. This is the story of what was actually wrong, and what finally set him free.

The pain that took years off his career.

Callum is hypermobile — his joints move through a greater range than most, a trait that can be a gift for a golfer and a liability for the connective tissue that has to control all that motion. For him, it showed up as stubborn, recurring pain in the left upper back: the exact region a right-handed golfer loads on every backswing and unloads on every follow-through. It didn’t just hurt. It changed how he could rotate, and it kept him out of competition for years.

Pain like this is easy to mislabel as “just a tight muscle” — but in hypermobile athletes it often lives in the fascia, the connective-tissue web that wraps and links every muscle, and in the metabolic systems that fuel tissue repair. Treat only the surface and it keeps coming back. That had been Callum’s pattern for nearly five years.

A different kind of evaluation.

At The Fascia Institute and Treatment Center® of LA, Dr. Jacques Courseault, MD didn’t start with Callum’s back alone. He started with the whole athlete. The work-up combined three layers most clinics never check together:

STEP 01

Metabolic evaluation & treatment

A look under the hood at how Callum’s body fuels recovery — the inputs that decide whether tissue heals or stays inflamed. Identified gaps were treated directly, so his body could finally hold a repair.

STEP 02

Genomics Performance Screen

A FIT GPS Genomics Performance Screen read Callum’s DNA for how he processes nutrients, manages inflammation, and rebuilds connective tissue — turning guesswork into a plan built for his biology.

STEP 03

Custom supplementation

From those results, a supplementation protocol made specifically for Callum — not a shelf product, but the precise support his metabolism and genetics called for to repair and perform.

STEP 04

Hydrofascia Release™

The piece that finally unlocked the left upper back — an ultrasound-guided Hydrofascia Release that freed the bound fascia driving years of pain.

Hydrofascia Release for the left upper back.

The breakthrough came from the fascia. Fascial Mapping® located the restricted, scarred tissue in Callum’s left upper back that imaging had missed for years. Under real-time ultrasound guidance, Dr. Courseault performed a Hydrofascia Release™ — using the liquid pressure of the injection itself to separate the bound fascial planes and restore glide at the source.

He wasn’t pain-free overnight, and he’ll tell you that himself. But for the first time in years the pain that had been locked into his swing started to let go — far enough that he could train, rotate, and compete without his back dictating the round. Far enough, it turns out, to win.

The Outcome

Stromberg Masters champion — Moseley Golf Club.

After nearly five years without a win, Callum Davison returned to competition and took the title at the Stromberg Masters — a victory 1,726 days in the making, on a course in his own backyard.

“The pain kept me off the course for years. I’m a champion again.”

Golf is hard on your back. You’re not imagining it.

The golf swing is one of the most violent rotational movements in sport — repeated hundreds of times a week, almost always in the same direction. It’s no surprise the back is the single most common area of pain golfers report, from weekend players to tour professionals. Organizations like the Titleist Performance Institute have spent years documenting how swing mechanics and the body’s mobility load the spine and surrounding soft tissue.

For hypermobile golfers especially, that load lands on connective tissue that is built to stretch but struggles to stabilize — which is exactly how chronic fascial pain takes hold. The good news: when the problem lives in the fascia, it is real, it is findable, and it is treatable.

Frequently asked.

I’ve had back pain for years and my scans are normal. Can you still help?
Often, yes. Pain that lives in the fascia rarely shows up on an MRI — which is exactly why it gets missed. Fascial Mapping® is designed to find it.

Do I have to be a competitive golfer?
No. We treat golfers from weekend foursomes to the pro tour, and plenty of patients who’ve never picked up a club. The fascia doesn’t care what your handicap is.

Does being hypermobile change my treatment?
It can. Hypermobility and EDS affect how connective tissue behaves, so your plan is built around it. Learn more about how we think about fascia.

Do I need a referral?
No. We see self-referred patients. Prior imaging is welcome but not required — just reach out.
